Railway engineering academics visit cliff railway

Railway engineering academics visit Cliff Railway on Thursday 28th July.
On 28th July, 2016 the Cliff Railway was visited by a group of railway engineering academics. The group had been attending a workshop at Stourport-on-Severn. Taking time out from the workshop, the academics made a private visit to the Cliff Railway, having travelled to Bridgnorth in a dining-car on the Severn Valley Railway. The visit had been organized by the University of Southampton’s Rail Centre. The four UK universities represented were those of Southampton, Birmingham, Huddersfield and Nottingham. The group was led by Professor William Powrie, who is dean of the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Engineering and Environment. Two other professors and fifteen PhD students were included in the group of forty-five. The academics were welcomed to the Cliff Railway by the directors. A short talk on the history and engineering of the Cliff Railway was then given by its chairman Dr. Malvern Tipping. Since Professor Powrie has a particular interest in hydraulics, this was framed to include Sir George Croydon Marks, who apart from having founded Bridgnorth Cliff Railway and been its first managing director, was a cousin of the current directors and the pre-eminent hydraulic lift engineer of his era.
