Bridgnorth Cliff Railway on Mastermind

On Friday 5th October, 2018 Bridgnorth Cliff Railway featured in a question posed on BBC Television’s long-running quiz show ‘Mastermind’.

During the general knowledge round contestants were asked: at which Shropshire town on the River Severn is there a funicular railway connecting High Town and Low Town? The answer, of course, was Bridgnorth.

‘Mastermind’ was created by Bill Wright, taking inspiration from his World War II experiences of being interrogated by the Gestapo. The format sees five or six contestants facing two rounds of questions, one in a specialist subject and the other a general knowledge round. The quiz show’s first host was Magnus Magnusson, who was the quiz-master for twenty-five years from 1972. Peter Snow and Clive Anderson have subsequently hosted the show. It is now presented by veteran broadcaster John Humphreys, who has been in the role since 2003.

We were much surprised to see Bridgnorth Cliff Railway featured in the general knowledge round and look forward, perhaps one day, to seeing it appear in the specialist subject round.
